Tunisian Dessert Glossary: Baklawa, Samsa, Kaak Warka, Bjawia, Zrir & More

Daarna mixed-nut Tunisian baklawa

Tunisian sweets have a vocabulary of their own. Learning the names makes it easier to understand what you are ordering and how each pastry differs in texture, shape and flavor.

Baklawa

Baklawa is a layered pastry filled with nuts. Daarna offers pistachio, almond, mixed-nut and almond-pistachio versions. It is crisp, rich and one of the most recognizable Tunisian celebration sweets.

Samsa

Samsa is a folded triangular pastry with a nut filling. Almond, mixed nuts and almond-sesame versions each offer a different balance of crunch and richness.

Kaak Warka

Kaak warka is a delicate ring-shaped pastry. Daarna offers pistachio, almond, hazelnut, orange-almond and raspberry-almond varieties. The thin pastry shell makes it feel lighter than baklawa.

Kaak Nuts

Kaak Nuts are more substantial ring-shaped pastries with strong nut character. Pistachio, almond with pine nuts, hazelnut and Kaak Allemand are part of the collection.

Bjawia

Bjawia is a dense nut confection rather than a flaky pastry. Almond, pistachio, hazelnut and pine nuts are combined into rich, compact pieces for people who want maximum nut flavor.

Zrir

Zrir is a smooth Tunisian confection made with sesame, almond, hazelnut and raw honey. It is spoonable and completely different from the baked pastries in the collection.

Stuffed Dates

Stuffed dates combine naturally sweet fruit with nut fillings. Daarna offers mixed nuts, pistachio with raspberry, and almond with hazelnut.

Traditional Energy Balls

These compact nut sweets come in almond, hazelnut, pistachio and pine-nut combinations. Their small size makes them easy to serve on mixed dessert trays.

Decorative Nut Pastries

Pineapple Nuts and Butterfly Nuts are shaped by hand to bring visual interest to gift boxes and celebration tables. Their fillings include pistachio, hazelnut, almond and pine nuts.
